Software engineering standards and philosophy of science: Models, high-risk decision making, and epistemic warrants
This talk explores the kinds of scientific models that inform public policy debates around pandemics and climate change. One understudied aspect of these endeavors is the role of scientific software. What standards should we apply to the engineering of such software? What levels of error and reliability can we tolerate? We focus on the recent ICL modeling of the COVID-19 pandemic as a useful case study for exploring these questions.
